About HKAMA

  • The Hong Kong Association of Massachusetts (HKAMA) was incorporated earlier this year with the intent of being a not-for-profit corporation, which designation is being applied for at the current time. HKAMA is sponsored by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO, the official representative office of the SAR). Initial funding has been obtained from the HKTDC and the association's lead corporate sponsor, State Street Corporation, a Boston-based global financial services company.
  • The objectives of the organization are to promote trade, business, investment, and cultural activities between Hong Kong and Massachusetts. Recognizing Boston's unique leadership position in investment management, private and venture capital, high technology, bio-science, health care, research and development, and higher education, opportunities abound for cross-border commercial cooperation and investments with Hong Kong, as the SAR celebrates its 10th year return to China and continues it's evolution as a world-class financial and commercial center that is increasingly important to China's economic and social development.
  • On the cultural front, it is important to celebrate and further understanding of the cultures of the two regions -- with Boston's rich history within the American context and Hong Kong's unique culture reflecting the achievements of the Hong Kong people through decades of amalgamation of the best of the East and the West, all the while adapting to rapid economic growth and socio-political changes. The HKETO has been active for many years in promoting Hong Kong's arts and culture in Massachusetts, such as the annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival on the Charles, as well as events that celebrate Hong Kong's achievements in film and the visual arts, among others. Many Massachusetts-based institutions, such as universities and performance groups, have regularly brought their art forms to Hong Kong. The HKAMA would like to play an active and constructive role in encouraging, and, if resources permit, sponsor these cross-border cultural exchanges. One of the objectives is also to enable the younger generation of Massachusetts citizens with Hong Kong roots to learn and experience the cultural heritage of Hong Kong.
  • The HKAMA is planning to host its inaugural event in Boston in the form of a symposium tentatively in October. The symposium will focus on educating the Massachusetts business community on the changing role of Hong Kong as a world city, with a strong finance and service infrastructure, and its role as a regional hub as part of China's emergence as an global economic power with strong geo-political influence. Sharpening the image of Hong Kong as a part of the China story and clarifying related commercial and political ambiguity with China will go a long way to foster business activities and cultural understanding between the two regions.
  • The HKAMA is also a Member Organization of the National US Hong Kong Business Association.
